Pepperdine Women's Soccer Shows Support For Toys For Tots

Dec. 10, 2010

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's women's soccer team gathered for a small holiday party earlier this week in front of the athletic department's Christmas tree in the Jones Trophy Room of Heritage Hall to wrap presents for the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation.

The foundation's mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Head coach Tim Ward said his team's tradition in the past had been to participate in a white elephant gift exchange, but this year he and his players felt those presents would be better off in the hands of those less fortunate.

Head coach Tim Ward said his team's tradition in the past had been to participate in a white elephant gift exchange, but this year he and his players felt those presents would be better off in the hands of those less fortunate.

"I thought it would be really cool for us to give back this Christmas, and it's easy for us to do that just because we see how blessed we are every day when we come to work or play for Pepperdine," he said. "Another tradition I started this year was to have the players write anonymous Christmas cards to each other. Even though they don't know who they are writing too, they can still bless and lift the spirit of those who read the note just by writing something uniquely positive."

For junior defender Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/ Brighton HS) Toys for Tots has always been close to her heart since her brother-in-law is a Marine who has personally delivered gifts to children in need.

"Through our team's work at the Malibu Soccer Academy, helping and teaching kids has really become something we're passionate about, and I thought Toys For Tots would be the perfect charity for us to be involved with," she said. "I consider it to be a blessing to help this organization, and it's nice that we can spread our love to others while becoming closer as a team."
