San Diego Sweeps First WCC Softball Weekly Honors

Feb. 12, 2018

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – San Diego senior outfielder Kailey Hill and freshman pitcher Halle Kyler have been named the West Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

The honors mark the fifth time in the five seasons that the WCC has sponsored softball as an official sport that the Toreros have picked up at least one Player of the Week honor in the opening weekend of the season. San Diego also earned an opening weekend award in 2014 (Jenny Lahitte), 2015 (Paige von Sprecken), 2016 (Tatum Schultz) and 2017 (Madison Casiano).

Hill earns her third career WCC honor after hitting .529 (9-for-17) with seven RBI’s, two home runs, a double, two runs and a .941 slugging percentage while leading the Torero’s to a 5-1 record. The senior had at least two hits in four of six games on the weekend and finished with a five-game hitting streak. Hill, who has produced at least on RBI in four of six games, capped her week with a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against CSU Bakersfield to break a 2-2 tie and give the Toreros their fifth straight win.

Kyler pitched in four of six games this weekend and holds a 3-0 record with a 1.42 ERA in her first week of collegiate softball. She held opponents to a .133 batting average and threw complete games in both of her starts for San Diego. She permitted just five runs and 11 hits in 24.2 innings pitched. Notable in her collegiate debut was a seven strikeout performance with just one run allowed on two hits in 5 1/3 innings against Campbell.
