LEXINGTON, KY. – Four West Coast Conference volleyball programs earned AVCA national academic honors as released by the organization last week. Three indoor programs – Gonzaga, Pepperdine and Saint Mary's – were selected while the NCAA Beach Volleyball national runner-up Waves, were also honored.

GONZAGA

Gonzaga picked up the honor after posting a 3.49 team GPA during the 2016-17 school year. Nine Zags who contributed to the award held GPAs of 3.50 or higher, and three averaged better than 3.75. When including the players who redshirted, GU volleyball posted a 3.60 team GPA in 2016-17.

In addition to their success in the classroom, the Bulldogs also performed well on the court last season, going 17-11 and tying for third in the West Coast Conference standings. Both finishes were the best in over 20 years.

PEPPERDINE

Pepperdine's indoor squad posted a 3.335 cumulative grade point average throughout the 2016-17 school year, after 10-of-16 eligible players bested the required 3.30 GPA mark.  The highest returning grade point average was earned by rising junior Jenna Tunnell who finished the year with a 3.92 average.

The beach squad tabbed a 3.304 collective grade point average, with 10-of-14 individual players earning grade point averages above the required team mark.  The highest returning GPA for the Waves will be rising senior Corinne Quiggle, who posted a 3.922 average.

ABOUT THE AVCA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that 822 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season. The 822 programs easily shattered the previous year's total of 764 to establish an all-time high. The AVCA honored 145 indoor NCAA Division I women's programs and 19 beach volleyball programs this season.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
