SAN BRUNO, Calif. ---
Saint Mary’s was picked to finish first in the 2014 West Coast Conference preseason women’s tennis poll, as voted on by the conference head coaches. The Gaels enter the season ranked No. 37 in the current ITA team poll and are headlined by 2013 WCC Player of the Year and preseason all-league selection Jenny Jullien.

A senior, Jullien is the WCC’s top rated player by the ITA at No. 7 (preseason), also the top singles rating in program history. In a close race, Saint Mary’s earned six first place votes and 78 overall, just two votes in front of defending WCC Champion No. 48 Pepperdine. The Waves collected 76 points, including the remaining four first place votes and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the 26th consecutive year in 2013. Senior Ale Granillo (No. 93) and junior Lorraine Guillermo (No. 19) were the only teammates named to the preseason squad and both enter the year with top-100 ITA singles rankings.

San Diego was picked third in the preseason poll with 61 votes. The Toreros are ranked No. 61 in the current ITA team rankings and have advanced to the NCAAs two of the last three seasons. Santa Clara was tabbed fourth with 58 votes. The No. 66 Broncos will rely on senior Katie Le, an All-WCC preseason selection, who is ranked No. 35 in singles by the ITA.

BYU rounds out the top-five with 45 votes, just one in front of sixth-place San Francisco. The Dons will look to sophomore Andrea Ka, a member of the 2014 All-WCC preseason team. Loyola Marymount checked in at seventh with 32 votes.

Gonzaga (20), Portland (20) and WCC newcomer Pacific (16) rounded out the preseason poll. The Pilots were represented on the preseason All-WCC squad by sophomore Maja Mladenovic.

This spring marks the third season all WCC women's tennis teams will compete in a single round robin regular season schedule and the 2014 campaign is the first to feature 10 teams. The 2014 WCC Championships will take place April 23-26 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
