Feb. 23-The Saint Mary's men?s tennis team was defeated by Utah at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex by a final team score of 6-1. The loss drops the Gaels to 2-7 on the season while Utah improve to 4-4 in match play on the season.

In singles play, the Gaels were led by 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree, Thomas Burgemeister as he defeated Utah?s #1 singles player, Daniel Lohff in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. With the victory, Burgemeister improves his record at #1 singles to 5-4 on the season. Though the Gaels were defeated in the rest of the singles matches, Saint Mary?s made Utah work for every set.. The Gaels? Martin Marechal moved up to the #2 singles position for the first time all season and was narrowly defeated by Utah?s Roeland Brateanu in a marathon match, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Saint Mary?s Romain Lachens made Utah?s Tyler Poulson sweat before falling in a extremely close match, 6-4, 5-7 (10-5).

In doubles action, Saint Mary?s lost the overall team point despite a victory for the Gaels? tandem of Thomas Burgemeister and J.J. Whitlinger when they defeated the Ute?s Tyler Poulson and Tomasz Grzyb by a final score of 8-6. At #1 doubles the Gaels? pair of Andre Sion and Romain Lachens played Utah?s Roeland Brateanu and Nick Coutts close before falling 8-6.
