SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Pepperdine freshman Luisa Stefani has been named the 2016 WCC Player of the Year as well as the WCC Freshman of the Year while her head coach, Per Nillson, was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.

A total of 22 singles student-athletes, and 11 doubles teams were recognized as All-Conference honorees. All three individual awards - along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams - were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Stefani had a stellar debut season for Pepperdine to earn the honor of being the first student-athlete to be named the WCC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season since Jenni Heiner of San Francisco swept the honors in 2008. Stefani, ranked as high as number two in the ITA tennis rankings this year, had an overall record of 31-5 while going 6-1 in WCC play at No. 1 singles. The freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was 20-4 against nationally ranked opponents and also contributed in doubles play with a 19-4 doubles record on the year.

Nilsson guided the Waves to a perfect 9-0 record en route to their fourth consecutive WCC regular season title. It is the second consecutive WCC Coach of the Year honor for the second-year head coach who also took home the honors last season after an 8-1 season in Malibu.

The women's teams will kick off the WCC tennis championships on Thursday, April 28 with the first serve at 1 p.m.
