WCC Volleyball Teams Battle for Top Spots in Conference Play

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Just five weeks remain in conference play and San Diego still remains undefeated. Three teams are ranked in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, while one receives votes. San Diego posted another perfect 2-0 record this past week to remain undefeated in WCC play at 8-0. The Toreros picked up a 3-1 win over Gonzaga, followed by a 3-0 sweep over Loyola Marymount. Sophomore outside hitter Sandra Lozic earned WCC Player of the Week honors after pacing the team's offense with 25 kills on 29 swings on the week, while only committing four errors to hit for a .444 clip.
Second place BYU will face off against third place Saint Mary's in a rematch on Thursday at 6:00 PM, which will be televised on BYUtv. The Cougars, who are currently 18-1 on the season, lost to Saint Mary's on September 29 in Moraga.
BYU (18-1) is tied with Penn State (currently ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll) for the best win-loss record in NCAA Division I volleyball.
Pepperdine picked up two wins at home over Bay Area rivals San Francisco and Santa Clara to improve to 14-7 overall and 3-4 in WCC play. In the 3-2 win over the Broncos, Jazmine Orozco tallied 19 kills.
San Diego is No. 4 in NCAA Division I volleyball in kills per set (14.82 kps) while Pepperdine (14.45 kps) and Saint Mary's (14.43 kps) are No. 13 and 14, respectively.
Seven WCC teams are in the top 60 in the latest NCAA DI women's volleyball RPI report.
After taking on BYU on Thursday, Saint Mary's will host unbeaten and nationally-ranked San Diego in a "DigPink" match on Saturday. San Diego and Saint Mary's were both chosen to take home the WCC title this season in the preseason coaches poll.
October marks "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and all nine WCC volleyball teams are hosting a DigPink match during the month to help support cancer awareness. The next two WCC PINK matches will be the BYU-Saint Mary's and San Diego-San Francisco matchups on Thursday.
