Player of the Week

Lindsey Sherburne, San Diego

The junior setter from Saratoga, Calif. led the Toreros to two weekend road victories over then-No. 14 Saint Mary's and San Francisco. Sherburne led the explosive San Diego offense, tallying 122 assists over eight games in the two matches. Against the Gaels, Sherburne recorded a double-double with 58 assists and 15 digs. She also chipped in five kills, two block assists, and hit at a .556 clip. Sherburne posted 64 assists, nine digs, two kills and one block assist against San Francisco. San Diego hit .253 as a team for the week. Sherburne leads the WCC and ranks seventh nationally in assists per game. She also ranks fifth in the WCC in service aces per game, and 15th in digs per game. With the weekend wins, San Diego now stands atop the WCC standings at 5-0 in conference play, and is the only remaining unbeaten team in WCC play.

Stratos Reaches 300 Wins
Loyola Marymount head coach Steve Stratos recorded his 300th win with a sweep of Portland Friday night. With the 300 career wins, Stratos joins current Pepperdine coach Nina Matthies as the only two volleyball coaches in WCC history to reach the milestone. Stratos added one more win to that total after a sweep of Gonzaga Saturday night. Matthies has 415 career wins in 22 years. Stratos is now the fourth active LMU coach with 300 wins, as Gary Ferrin (softball), Steve Aggers (men's basketball), and Jamie Sanchez (women's tennis) have each accomplished the feat.

Lights...Camera...Action!
Santa Clara and Pepperdine square off Sunday afternoon for the third televised WCC match of the year. The match is part of the Sunday Night Spike 2004 package presented by CSTV and the AVCA. The match will air live at 3:00 p.m. PST. Pepperdine is making its third television appearance as part of the Sunday Night Spike 2004 package, while Santa Clara is making its season debut on CSTV. Pepperdine lost its two previous televised matches to USC and Hawaii.

San Diego's Dynamic Duo
San Diego's Lindsey Sherburne and Devon Forster are the only two WCC players to have been ranked amongst the nations individual statistical leaders all six weeks so far this season. Sherburne is currently seventh in assists, while Forster is 11th in kills. Annalisa Muratore (SCU) has been in the top 30 five of the six weeks, while being amongst the leaders in two different categories four of those five weeks. Stacey O'Connor (SMC), Kelli Nerison (LMU), Christina Hinds (PEP), Michelle Oakland (POR), Jamie Kartchner (USF), Sheena Surplus (POR), and Dina DeBernardi (LMU) have all been in the top 30 at least one week this year.

Games to Watch

Portland at Gonzaga - Friday, October 22 at 7:00 pm
The only two remaining teams without a conference win will go head-to-head Friday night in Spokane, Wash. Both Portland and Gonzaga are 0-6 in WCC matches. The Bulldogs took Santa Clara to five before losing, 3-2, in the first WCC match of the year, but have been swept in the other five WCC matches. The Pilots stole one game from both Santa Clara and Pepperdine before falling, 3-1, in both matches. Portland was swept in the other four WCC matches. Portland is second in the WCC in digs per game, fifth in hitting percentage, seventh in assists per game, kills per game and service aces per game, and eighth in blocks per game. Gonzaga is fifth in blocks per game, sixth in service aces per game, and eighth in hitting percentage, assists per game, kills per game, and digs per game.

Loyola Marymount at #22 San Diego - Saturday, October 23 at 7:00 pm
Two of the hottest teams in the WCC take the court Saturday night as Loyola Marymount travels to San Diego. LMU is riding a five-match win streak, while USD in one better, with a six-match win streak on the line. The Lions are 4-1 in WCC action, with their lone loss coming at the hands of Saint Mary's in the first WCC match of the year. San Diego is the only remaining unbeaten team in WCC action with a 5-0 conference record. Loyola Marymount is second in the WCC in hitting percentage, third in kills per game and blocks per game, fourth in assists per game, and seventh in digs per game. San Diego leads the WCC in hitting percentage, assists per game, kills per game, and service aces per game, is third in digs per game, and seventh in blocks per game. The Lions swept the season series against the Toreros last year. LMU is ranked No. 9 in the Pacific Region according to the RichKern.com/AVCA Division I Regional Rankings, while San Diego comes in at No. 7.

Pepperdine at #19 Santa Clara - Sunday, October 24 at 3:00 pm
Pepperdine and Santa Clara square off in a televised match on CSTV in Santa Clara, Calif. Sunday afternoon. This will mark the third time the Waves have been featured on the Sunday Night Spike 2004 package by CSTV and the AVCA, while the Broncos are making their on-air debut for the year. Pepperdine has won six straight against Santa Clara, including a 3-1 victory at Pepperdine last year on CSTV. The Waves and the Broncos are currently 3-2 in WCC matches, two matches behind conference leader San Diego. Pepperdine leads the WCC in digs per game, is fourth in blocks per game, fifth in kills per game, sixth in assists per game, seventh in hitting percentage, and eighth in service aces per game. Santa Clara leads the WCC in blocks per game, is second in assists per game and kills per game, is third in hitting percentage, and fifth in service aces per game and digs per game. Pepperdine is ranked No.11 in the Pacific Region according to the RichKern.com/AVCA Division I Regional Rankings, while Santa Clara comes in at No. 6.

Gonzaga Bulldogs
Gonzaga remains winless in WCC play after a weekend trip to Los Angeles that resulted in two more conference losses...The Bulldogs took on Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on the road, and were swept, 3-0, in both matches...Gonzaga also played host to Eastern Washington earlier in the week looking for a non-conference win, but was held to its lowest hitting percentage of the season, and lost, 3-0...Senior setter Emilee Gihring(15), junior outside hitter Lacey Bell(12), and junior libero Jessica Herrera(11) recorded double-digit kills against the Waves...Senior middle blocker Lauren Armas led the way for the Zags against the Lions with seven kills...Gonzaga will play host to Portland Friday night in its only match of the week...Like the Bulldogs, the Pilots have yet to win a WCC match...The two teams split the series last season, with the home team winning both matches.

Loyola Marymount Lions
Loyola Marymount swept the matches this past weekend against Portland and Gonzaga...The Lions took all six games of the two matches...The weekend was highlighted by Coach Stratos winning his 300th career match in the Friday night victory over Portland...Redshirt freshman outside hitter Jania Motton led the way for LMU in her first career start against the Pilots, tallying a career and match-high 13 kills...She followed up that performance with an 11-kill night against Gonzaga...Fellow freshman outside hitter Heather Hughes chipped in 12 kills against GU...The Lions will face a tough WCC weekend on the road, taking on 19th-ranked Santa Clara on Friday and 22nd-ranked San Diego on Saturday...The Lions swept the Toreros in their two meetings last year, and split with the Broncos, with the home team winning both matches.

Pepperdine Waves
Pepperdine was back to its winning ways in WCC play this weekend...The Waves swept Gonzaga, and beat Portland, 3-1, at home...Pepperdine featured a very balanced attack against GU, as four players reached double-digit kills...Junior outside hitter Katy Daly led the way with 13 kills, while senior outside hitter Kristen Schultz chipped in 12...Freshman middle blocker Lecca Roberts and sophomore middle blocker Sophia Milo each added 11...Daly again led the way against the Pilots with 21 kills, while three Wave players recorded double-digit kills in the match...Senior libero Christina Hinds recorded 21 and 30-dig nights, while junior setter Melissa Mehlhorn added a double-double against the Pilots...Pepperdine will travel to No. 22 San Diego this Friday night looking to upset the Toreros, and will play No. 19 Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon in a live televised match on CSTV.

Portland Pilots
Portland faced a tough weekend in Southern California, and was unable to come away with a win...The Pilots were swept, 3-0, by LMU, and dropped a 3-1 match against Pepperdine...Portland is winless in WCC play...Senior middle blocker Michelle Oakland led the team with nine kills and four blocks against LMU, and chipped in 14 kills against Pepperdine...Junior outside hitter Sara Vercruyssen led the Pilots against Pepperdine with 16 kills and a season-high 19 digs, her eighth double-double of the season...Junior setter Sheena Surplus added 43 assists and 13 digs en route to her third double-double of the season...Portland will travel to Portland State on Wednesday, before traveling to Gonzaga Friday night...The Pilots and Bulldogs are the only WCC teams without a win in conference play... The two teams split the series last season, with the home team winning both matches.

Saint Mary's Gaels
Saint Mary's suffered its first conference loss to then-No. 25 San Diego at home, but was able to rebound and beat then-No. 15 Santa Clara the following night...The Gaels lost to the Toreros, 3-1, and beat the Broncos, 3-1...Freshman outside hitter Missie Stidham led the way with a double-double, recording 12 kills and 12 digs in the loss to USD...Saint Mary's snapped its 14-match losing streak to Santa Clara Saturday night...The Gaels dropped the first game, but bounced back by taking the next three games...Junior outside hitter Kaui Salzman led the Gaels with a season-high 21 kills and 17 digs...Stidham added 13 kills and 19 digs against SCU in just three games...Sophomore outside hitter Cassandra Kolkka also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs...Saint Mary's will host Bay Area rival San Francisco this Saturday night...The Dons swept the two matches last year.

San Diego Toreros
San Diego won the battle of the WCC unbeatens this past weekend at Saint Mary's, and beat San Francisco, 3-1, on the road...The Toreros are now the only remaining unbeaten team in WCC play...Senior outside hitter Devon Forster led USD against SMC with 21 kills, and against USF with 22 kills and 18 digs...Junior setter Lindsey Sherburne was named WCC Player of the Week after recording a double-double with 58 assists and 15 digs against SMC, and 64 assists and nine digs against USF...Senior outside hitter Kristen Hurst also recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs against the Dons...San Diego enters the weekend as the hottest team in the WCC...The Toreros will play host to Pepperdine and LMU...The Waves have won 11 straight against the Toreros, while the Lions swept the series against USD last season.

San Francisco Dons
San Francisco dropped two WCC matches at home this weekend to then-No. 15 Santa Clara and then-No. 25 San Diego...The Dons took the Broncos to five games before losing, 3-2, and were able to steal one game from the Toreros before falling, 3-1...Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers tallied a match-high 27 kills against SCU to go along with 18 digs, and 13 kills and 15 digs against USD...Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart added 14 kills and 15 digs against SCU, and 14 kills and 11 digs against USD...Both Hart and Voelckers have recorded 11 double-doubles on the year, and five in the last five matches...Voelckers, a transfer from Hartford, has 1,889 career kills...The Dons will travel across the Bay to No. 15 Saint Mary's Saturday night for their only match of the week...USF swept the series last year.

Santa Clara Broncos
Santa Clara extended its win streak against San Francisco to 29 straight matches this weekend, but failed to extend its win streak against Saint Mary's...The Broncos snuck by the Dons, 3-2, before falling to the Gaels, 3-1...Sophomore outside hitter Kim McGiven and freshman middle blocker Annalisa Muratore each tallied 16 kills against USF...Junior outside hitter Cassie Perret added 14 kills and 16 digs against the Dons...McGiven once again led the Broncos with 20 kills against SMC, while Muratore added 19...Freshman libero Caroline Walters recorded 21 digs against USF and a match-high 24 digs against SMC...Santa Clara returns home this weekend to face Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine...The Broncos split the season series with the Lions last year, and have lost six straight to the Waves...The Pepperdine match will be televised on CSTV.
