WCC October Player of the Month
Shannon Lowell, SMC:
Lowell was huge for the Gaels in October, and was the driving force behind their 8-1 month. She was named the WCC Player of the Week on for her efforts against LMU and Pepperdine on 10/28 and 10/31. For the month she hit an astounding .397, notching 95 kills, on 199 attempts. She hit over .350 in six of the nine matches the Gaels played. She also notched nine aces, 18 digs, and led the team with 45 total blocks. Lowell averaged 2.79 kills per game, and 1.41 blocks per game. She recorded her first double-double of the season against Santa Clara on 10/8, recording 14 kills and 11 total blocks. In the match against Gonzaga she notched a season-high 18 kills on 24 attempts for a career-high .667 hitting percentage. In the five set match against Pepperdine, Lowell notched 17 kills on 34 attempts with no errors for a .500 hitting percentage. She also notched five total blocks. She was at her best when the Gaels needed her most in that match, notching the final two kills and a block for the Gaels in the fifth set to seal the win.
WCC Player of the Week
Alita Fisher, SMC:
Fisher notched 34 digs, four aces, and five assists. In doing so, she set a new career-high and broke a Saint Mary's single season record, while helping the Gaels go 2-0 and finish their WCC schedule with the best finish in school history. She broke a Saint Mary's single-season record with 452 digs on the year, breaking a five year old record.

Two WCC Teams Ranked Among The Nation's Best
Two West Coast Conference women's volleyball teams open the season ranked in national preseason polls, with three more receiving votes. All five teams are returning from an appearance in last year's NCAA Tournament. The University of San Diego came in at No. 15 in the AVCA poll and 16 in the Volleyball Magazine poll, while Santa Clara University ranked 20th in Volleyball Magazine and 25th in the AVCA poll. Pepperdine receiveed voes in both polls, while Saint Mary's and San Francisco gathered votes on the AVCA poll.

WCC Among the Nation's Best
Over the last six seasons, the West Coast Conference has established itself as one of the premier women's volleyball conferences in the country. Over the past six seasons, the WCC has owned a national top five ranking in the RPI four times. In 2008, the WCC had one of its best seasons ever tying for a conference high with the fourth best NCAA RPI ranking in the country.
WCC In The NCAA Tournament
WCC volleyball teams are no strangers to the NCAA Tournament. In fact, since 1997, the WCC has sent at least three teams each year into the postseason, totaling 45 teams. Last year was no different as Pepperdine, Saint Mary's San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara all made the tournament. In the past five seasons alone, the WCC has sent 20 teams into the NCAA Tournament with a conference record six teams advancing to the postseason in 2003.
Five Teams in 2008 NCAA Tournament
The WCC has placed five teams in last year's NCAA Tournament, which marked the highest percentage of teams from any conference in the country to make it to the tournament. It tied the highest number of WCC team since the conference sent a record six teams in 2003. It also marked the 13th year in a row that the WCC has sent at least three teams to the tournament.
Welcome Back
All eight WCC teams return several key players in 2009. In all, the WCC returns six All-WCC first team members and nine of the 14 players who earned All-WCC honorable mention. The returning first team All-WCC members include: Megan Burton (SMC), Amy DeGroot (USD), Kapua Kamana'o (SMC), Shannon Lowell (SMC), Sarah Mandala (USF), and Ali Troost (USD).
