Five Capture AVCA All-American Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference placed five student-athletes on the 2016 AVCA All-American teams as announced by the organization.  

Three WCC programs placed at least one student-athlete on the list, led by two from 2016 WCC Champion BYU and San Diego. Loyola Marymount also collected an Honorable Mention selection for the second consecutive season.. 

BYU senior middle blocker Amy Boswell, the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, earned First Team All-American honors. A two-time All-American, Boswell earned second team accolades last season and is the 14th Cougar in program history to earn first team selection. Freshman outside McKenna Miller collected Third Team selection for the Cougars after her collegiate debut season.

San Diego senior outsider hitter and 2016 WCC Player of the Year Lisa Kramer earned her second straight honorable mention selection while teammate and fellow senior Lauren Schad captured her first All-America nod for the Toreros as a middle hitter. Junior outside hitter and 2016 WCC Defensive Player of the Year Sarah Sponcil of Loyola Marymount secured honorable mention accolades for the second straight season.  

This marks the sixth straight year the WCC has placed at least four on the AVCA All-American lists and the conference has produced a first team selection in five of the last six seasons.

AMY BOSWELL, SR., MB -- FIRST TEAM

Boswell, a senior from Aloha, Oregon, was named AVCA First-Team All-America. She led the team in blocks per set (1.26) and hitting percentage (.372). Boswell was added to the All-WCC First Team as well as the All-Pacific South Region First Team earlier this year. Additionally, she was named the CoSIDA Academic All-America Player of the Year for the sport of volleyball. 

McKENNA MILLER, FR., OH -- THIRD TEAM

Miller led the BYU in kills per set (3.89) and finished second in the WCC in kills. Miller was named the WCC Freshman of the Year and added to the All-WCC First Team as well as the Freshman Team and the All-Pacific South Region First Team. 

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

SARAH SPONCIL, JR., OH -- HONORABLE MENTION

Sponcil, an AVCA All-Region selection earlier this year, recently became the first Lion to earn WCC Defensive Player of the Year honors since Betsi Metter accomplished the feat in 2011, 2012 and 2013. A first team All-WCC selection this year, the versatile six-rotation player led the team in kills with 402, averaging 3.65 per set. She also tied for the team lead in aces with 26, and was second on the team in digs with 328 (2.98 per set). Collecting a double-double in more than half of her matches this year, she finished the 2016 campaign with 16, including posting double-digit kills in all but five matches. 

SAN DIEGO

LISA KRAMER, SR., OPP -- HONORABLE MENTION

As the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year, Kramer earned her second consecutive All-American honor. Kramer led the league in kills during conference play (4.11) and was second in points per set (4.33) and eighth in hitting percentage (.305) as the primary attack option for a team ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in 2016. Kramer is the 10th Torero to earn Player of the Year honors and led the Toreros offense with 383 kills (4.21 kps), and hit for a .297 clip. 

LAUREN SCHAD, SR., MH -- HONORABLE MENTION

Schad takes home All-American accolades for the first time in her career, after also being selected first-team All-WCC this season. Schad was second on the team in kills with 273 (2.76 kps), while hitting for a .410 clip. She was also second on the team in blocks with 69, and moved into 10th all-time at USD in career blocks.
